Clinical Nutrition

Nutrition is an important aspect of health and wellness, and a personalized diet plan is an essential component of nutritional counseling. Proper nutrition is required for development, tissue maintenance, energy production, repair, healing, immune defense, insulation, chemical reactions (enzymatic, hormonal, etc.), and a variety of other physiological activities. According to the CDC, 34.2 million Americans have diabetes, accounting for about one-tenth of the population; 88 million American adults have prediabetes, accounting for around one-third of the population. Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, cognitive impairment, endocrine disorders, obesity, birth abnormalities, infertility, neuropsychiatric disorders, delayed wound healing, and decreased energy are some of the health concerns linked to poor nutrition. As a result, learning about proper nutrition and its role in the body is critical for preventing and delaying chronic diseases. In a nutritional counseling session, factors such as food allergies/hypersensitivities, metabolic function, and nutritional status, as well as health goals (weight loss, weight gain, prenatal and postnatal care, eating disorders, etc.) are evaluated to create an individualized dietary plan for the patient to achieve their health goals. Benefits of clinical nutrition counseling include work toward your specific health goals, develop healthy eating patterns, understand the best diet for your health condition, learn about healthy food choices, learn how to optimize your nutritional intake, address specific nutritional deficiencies, manage food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances, change personal habits and behaviors around food, manage eating disorders, optimize digestion, optimize immune function, improve sleep quality, improve sleep quality, improve energy, improve concentration and cognitive function, achieve your weight loss goals and maintain a healthy weight, manage chronic disease through dietary changes, manage heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, manage insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate many processes throughout the body, affecting our overall health and wellness. Both men and women naturally experience a decline in hormone production with age. Various other underlying causes of low hormone production need to be evaluated and addressed before considering hormone replacement therapy. These underlying conditions include but are not limited to: low-functioning pituitary gland, environmental and lifestyle factors, premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid disorders, chronic kidney disease, autoimmune conditions, and toxins. Decreased hormone production as we get older is a natural phenomenon that leads to many health complications for both men and women. These natural hormones include estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone; BHRT can play an integral role in replacing hormones the body produces naturally. These hormones are derived from plant sources and are chemically identical to the naturally existing hormones in our body. BHRT is a newer and safer hormone replacement therapy. Traditional hormone replacement therapy came with its risks and harmful side effects. The complications with traditional hormone therapy lie within the chemical differences from the body’s natural hormones. This difference makes it difficult for the body to clear excess hormones that create health complications. Bioidentical hormones are recognized as the body’s natural hormones, and they are excreted normally. BHRT for women: BHRT is an alternative therapy to supplement the body’s natural hormones for age-related decline, particularly for women going through perimenopause or menopause. Decreased hormone levels can manifest into many health conditions affecting overall wellness. BHRT helps restore hormone levels and alleviates symptoms of menopause such as: fatigue, hot flashes, insomnia, low libido, mood changes, memory loss, night sweats, painful intercourse, sleep issues, vaginal dryness, and weight gain. BHRT for men: middle-aged men more commonly experience hormonal imbalance such as low testosterone, which negatively affects their health and quality of life. Symptoms associated with men’s hormonal imbalance are frequently experienced during a stage referred to as andropause. BHRT is used to restore hormone levels and assist in alleviating symptoms of andropause such as: decreased strength, depression, fatigue, gynecomastia, hair loss, insomnia, irritability, low libido, lower motivation, memory loss, night sweats, urinary problems, and weight gain.
